baking soda, vinegar and a nylon brush have always worked for me.

My sons roommates are fire fighters too. They work for the National Forrest Service. When they come home their boots are always covered with soot, mud, and whatever else they step in at work. Their floors are disgusting to me. I mix together equal parts of baking soda, vinegar, and warm water in small bucket. Then I give the boys a nylon brush and let them scrub their own mess. Afterwards, I put on a light coat of wax to help prevent serious problems in the future.
