Musky & Musty Smell...

Postby apbtmia on Thu Aug 23, 2007 4:39 pm

I can NOT stand it anymore. I moved into my house 2.5 years ago and have eliminated a hoard of problems. The odor of 3 cats that didn't know how to use clay but the wood floors only.

The nasty mouse droppings everywhere (thank goodness they took the mice with them!).

I have ripped out carpet (trust me, had to) ripped out walls, scrubbed walls, floors, appliances and everything.

Last summer a few mice (one at a time) found solice in my home when sewer work was being done. The same smell that I had when they were living here has not left my house. They are GONE, trust me. The smell is not in the attic, it is not in my room, the basement, or anywhere except the livingroom and the kitchen. It is extremely strong when there is a lot of humidity or rain. I have cleaned everything. I don't know what to do or where to look. PLEASE help....I get sick when I smell it. It is a musky & musty smell. It does not smell like a dead animal. Most people tell me that they do not smell anything (most likely all the stuff I am covering it with).

I am looking into having my vents cleaned now also.

Animal odor eliminators

Hello apbtmia and welcome to Mrs. Clean's Forum!
I totally understand your frustration with the persistent odors. There are a few things to try:
First, you can try to locate the "stain" and where the odor is coming from. You can use any black light. This allows the stain to be located. Then you can use an odor neutralizer directly on it such as Gone! Pet stain and odor remover, See Spot Go, Four Paws Wee Wee and Fresh N Clean.

There are also products that contain a mineral called Zeolite. It is a natural mineral that absorbs moisture, fumes, chemicals and odors. Zeolite is a natural mineral that adsorbs moisture, fumes, chemicals and odors. It comes from volcanic ash, and is all natural, works for years and the granules can be placed back out in the sun (for 6 hours) to be recharged!
Look for the product that comes in mesh pouches that you can slip under and in the couch; this mineral is really amazing odor remover and works very well!

Products made with Zeolite can be found in the pet section of your grocery store, pet stores and home improvement stores in the odor remover section. (you can also search the web for zeolite odor remover)

For intense treatment to remove odors using this product, place some towels sprinkled with the zeolite minerals on and under the couch, and then cover the couch with a large cotton sheet. The odor will be gone the next day.

If you cannot find exactly where the odor is coming from, many people have had good luck with ozone generators. You can rent or purchase these machines. Some require you leave the residence for a period of time. These machines are supposed to eliminate the most stubborn odors.

I know, from cleaning experience that once urine has permeated floors, you usually need to rip them up and use "Kills" to seal out the odor. Try the above suggestions first and hopefully you will not have to do the more aggressive approach!

Good Luck and let me know how it turns out!
