The self cleaning technology helps but big spills and splatters will smoke and burn and get baked on if not wiped up when they happen.
To save on cleanup time when you know you are cooking, cover the bottom of the oven and/or pan with aluminum foil. Do not let the foil touch the heating element (Aluminum does burn too, you know) and it also helps to use a aluminum lined cookie sheet underneath the rack or the dish you are cooking with.
Continuous clean ovens stay clean with a little dishwashing soap and water. The ovens periodically cleans so spills and stains do not bake on.
Self-cleaning ovens heat to a very high heat for a few hours to burn off spills and stains.
