Removing Stains And Cleaning Cotton Sheets

Cotton is a comfortable fabric, it is easily to care for, and most stains will come out easily from sheets, blankets, and pillowcases thanks to the fabric’s unique qualities.

Blood stains are one kind of stain that can be a bit difficult to remove. Don't automatically think you have to throw out your stained sheets. You may be able to save your cotton bedding if you follow these steps:

Cleaning Cotton Sheets

Shampoo is the secret. That’s right, plain old shampoo. Blood can easily be removed from most washable cotton bedding by using shampoo and COLD water. Shampoo works really well to eliminate unsightly blood stains. Any type of shampoo will work.

Help with Blood Stain Removal

If blood stains a fabric that is dry clean only, immediately rinse the area with cold water and then blot to dry with an absorbent towel or cloth. Take your article of clothing to a drycleaner as soon as you can.

If the fabric with the blood stain is washable, flush the stained with cold water right away. Apply shampoo or a paste of laundry detergent and water directly on the stain. Work in gently with your fingers then rinse, and launder as usual.

If the blood stain still remains, try using a few drops of ammonia or 3% hydrogen peroxide from the medicine cabinet.

Shampoo works really well to eliminate blood stains from most fabrics. Fresh blood stains can be removed in seconds, and the older stains might need some pre-soaking.

How To Remove Blood Stains

  1. Pour a small amount of shampoo onto the stain.
  2. Wet the item with cold water and scrub till the blood begins lifting. Never use hot water as this will cook the blood and set the stain.
  3. After scrubbing soak the item for a few hours.
  4. Launder. If the blood stain remains, repeat the process. Do not dry on high heat if any blood remains.

Removing Stains From Bedding

For optimal stain removal, it’s best to attempt to remove the stain as soon as possible. Always use cold water when working on the stain, as heat may set the stain. In any case, using shampoo will usually eliminate hours-old stains in minutes. For stains more than 24 hours old, you may have to first soak the bedding in cold water first. Then, you can get to the task of fighting that stain.

Blood Stain Removal

  1. Pour a capful of shampoo on the stain, making sure that shampoo touches every part of the stain
  2. Rub the stained area until the shampoo is completely absorbed
  3. Rinse out with cold water. Continue scrubbing the bedding
  4. Repeat if needed
  5. When the blood stain is gone, launder as usual in cold water
If the stain is older than 48 hours you will probably need to soak the bedding first in cold water and/or with an enzyme presoak, then launder in cold water
