How To Clean And Remove Laundry Stains

Stains happen. It is just as simple as that.

You are eating and something falls on your lap. You are drinking a cup of coffee and something spills on your shirt. Lipstick, dirt, grass stains, and so much more could happen. Get Your Cleaning Supplies Together

The first thing for you to do is to get together the necessary elements to get the cleaning done. If you always have just a few of these products on hand, then you will be set for cleaning just about any laundry stain that happens your way.

• Terry cloths for blotting, white ones.
• White vinegar, do not use those with added ingredients
• Baking soda
• Isopropyl alcohol
• Mild detergent without dyes and fragrances
• Stain pre treatment sprays
• Spray bottle

Check Your Clothing Thoroughly Before Laundering

You know the stains are there but you also know that the kids probably did not tell you about them. So, when it comes time to doing the laundry and then you find the stain, what do you do? Here are some basic tips for stain finding and treating.

• Sort clothing as you would into like colors.
• As you sort, put together your first load. Look for stains on clothing.

• Do not place stained clothing in the dryer. Allow them to air dry. Look to insure stain is fully removed before placing into the dryer.

Treat Stains Quickly

Of course, we all know that the best way to treat a stain is to get to it as soon as possible. With that said, you should seek out the appropriate cleaning treatment and handle is right away. But, what happens when you can not get to the stain fast enough? Or, what do you put on your stain when the stain is fresh and you are not at home?

A little bit of quick thinking will help you here. A great way to keep a stain from setting into clothing is to dab club soda onto the area. This will help to remove the stain and will keep it from setting. Or, you can use cold water, run through on the back side of the clothing to remove the stain. Even applying salt to the area will keep the stain from setting.

Coffee and tea:

Use a mild detergent for treating this stain. Blot onto the stain and allow it to sit for several minutes. Rinse from the back.

Chocolate:

It is best to just use the pre treatment product on this type of stain. Make sure to scrape off anything that is possible to be removed.

Blood:

Flush the stain with cold water first. Then, apply a solution of one tablespoon of ammonia and one tablespoon of mild liquid hand soap, mixed into a cup of water. Blot on, blot off and launder.

Grass Stains:

Use natural enzyme products that you find at your local health food store or pharmacy for the best results. Otherwise, use pre treatment products following the directions carefully.

Wine Stains:

Use natural enzymes products to clean this stain. You can also get rid of the red colored wine stains by putting white wine onto the area. This will help to remove the red coloring, but you still need to insure that you pre treat the area and remove the sugars in the wine as well.

Removing Ring Around The Collar

Most of the stain commonly called "ring around the collar" is caused by natural body oil combined with atmospheric dirt and dust. If you successfully remove the oil, the dirt and stain should come with it. Try an application of shampoo directly onto the collar stain and scrub in with your fingers or with an old toothbrush. Allow to soak in for a half hour or so, then launder as usual. Before tossing the shirt or blouse into the dryer, examine the collar to see if the stain has been removed. If not, reapply the shampoo and scrub again, then toss it back into the washer. 

Stains of ring around the collar may also be removed by spraying with an ammonia based window cleaner and allowing it to soak in for a few minutes before washing. Common household ammonia is great for breaking up oil based stains.
