The joys of walking into a kitchen, immediately opening up an area and finding just what it is that you are looking for. It would be wonderful, wouldn’t it?

To help you get started, let’s first talk about space efficiency. The first thing you need to consider is how much space you have within your kitchen. A kitchen that is cramped with lots of stuff is overwhelming, frustrating and a mess. Instead, the first thing you need to do is this.

• Remove anything from your kitchen that is not food, food cooking items or somehow otherwise related to food.
• If you have a drawer full of pens and pencils, find a junk drawer in another area of the house. Bills and papers really should have their own organization area. Keeping your kitchen for kitchen related items will simplify matters tremendously.
• Next, go through and get rid of anything that you have too many of. Let’s face it, the plastic lids that you have really don’t match up with something else. Throw out what doesn’t have a mate, you won’t find it.
• Throw away food and food preparation items that are old or no longer used.
• Find a place to store each type of thing. Place all utensils in one drawer. Place all spices in one location. Go through each drawer and find its one and only use.
• Bigger items need more room. For example, you’ll need to dedicate a larger space to store your pots and pans, but you may not need a full cabinet to store your bowls.
• Clean off your counters. If you have lots of clutter on your counter tops, you have less workable space to use in your home. Instead of piling junk, papers and stuff there, just get rid of it for good. If you have not used or read the magazine, book or other item within the last year, get rid of it. Clutter is not a good thing.
• Appliances are great but if they are taking up room on your counter tops and are not being used, it’s a waste. If you really do not use them, get rid of them. If you do use them but not often, find a storage area for them so that you have more room on your counter.

• Use a hanging spice rack if you do not have a location to store them. These can be mounted under a cabinet or other area of the kitchen.
• Go through your cookbooks. How many do you use? How many really are nothing but clutter? Get rid of those that you do not use and save the space.
• Store plastic containers on top of one another inside a cabinet. Do not try to use a drawer to house them as this will just be a mess. There are new products on the market that feature a spinning unit that can be placed on a counter top for easy storage.
