How To Clean The Bathroom Shower

I consider my shower and bathroom a sanctuary. Taking a long hot shower or relaxing soak in the tub where I finally can have a moment to myself is one of my favorite things to do. I just can't relax as well if the tub or shower is dirty.

Here are some tips to keep your shower stall, glass shower door, and shower tile clean and shining for a long time.

Bathtub Cleaning

The tub will occupy a large area in your bathroom, and if you have a bathroom with a tub, it means you have a larger bathroom and you have a lot of work to do in the bathroom every time you wish to clean it.

Bathtubs are made of fiberglass and have shining surface inside. The shower stalls also have the fiberglass walls. The fiberglass can be cleaned by mild detergents or liquid soaps and non-scratching pads. Scratching pads will mar the surface of fiberglass. Bathtub rings are result of hard water. A water softener will remove all the problems of ring formation in bathtub. Ammonia based sprays, vinegar or baking soda removes the formed rings.

Cleaning The Showerhead

Showerheads: Showerheads need to be cleaned often. If the showerhead becomes clogged, it may be due to hard water or rust deposits. Try removing the shower head it and seeing if there are small deposits in the filter that you can remove. You might be able to remove the deposits by soaking in a vinegar or citrus solutions for half an hour and cleaning. Spraying the solution inside the head may also do the trick.

Removing Soap Scum

Soap scum is difficult to remove. It leaves a white film on the floors and glass shower doors. If it is possible to change to liquid soaps, it is a better alternative. Talc in soap is responsible for build up of soap scum and the talc adds only volume to soap without adding any value to it. Changing the soap will reduce the frequency of removing soap scum.

Removing Mold and Mildew

Mildew is a living organism. The black spots around the grout are an indication that the mildew is starting to grow. Mildew will be killed by chlorine based or hydrogen peroxide based solutions. These solutions cut through the mildew and completely overcome it. You do not need to scratch or rub. One to three applications of mildew solutions may have to be done.

Cleaning The Shower Curtains

Shower curtains become greasy with oils from soaps. Dirt spots also are deposited on the curtains. Removal becomes a tricky business. The mildew may form on the curtain. Soak the curtains in salt water or rubbing with lemon juice before washing them in the washing machine. The plastic curtains may be washed with commercial plastic sprays easily.

Cleaning The Mirrors and Glass Shower Doors

Shower glass panels and mirrors are best cleaned when dry. Rub mirrors with an old newspaper, or lint free cloth to clean them effectively.

Here is another really good tip I've tried myself- Apply rain-x to your clean glass shower doors (follow manufactures directions as if you were applying it on your windshield) When taking a shower the water will just run down in sheets, you won't get hard water spots or soap scum building up on the glass, and your shower doors will shine like new for 6 months or more. (Be careful here and don't spill any on the shower floor)

Cleaning Sink and Countertops

Washbasins: Porcelain washbasins are kept clean by commercial solutions for this purpose. Since the washbasins are glazed, it does not need major cleaning. Effective cleaning can be done by blocking the drain and putting 1/2 cup of vinegar and fill up with water. Let it stand for about 1 hour and remove drains stop after 1 hour. You will have a sparkling sink, that has been deodorized too.

Water Faucets

Water taps are deposited with hard water deposits and it shows around the tap opening. Cleaning is possible with l vinegar or rust removal preparations.

Bathroom Tile

Bathroom tiles are usually glazed tiles and can have an accumulated build up of body oil and soap scum. Soap scum from soap will also cause a major problem in bathrooms. Regular cleaning is a better solution. A better cleaning can be done if the bathroom is heated with steam (with bathroom door closed and the exhaust fan off). After 10 minutes, you will observe that soap scum is easier to remove. Soap scum will be removed if you allow regular laundry detergent for 2 to 3 hours and then clean with brush. If this fails, you can try tri-sodium phosphate, or other commercial cleaning product.

Cleaning The Toilet

The commode can be kept clean by regular flushing and using commercial cleaners. This is effective in most cases. The water rings are the results of hard water and it can easily be removed commercial cleaners or by using a pumice stone. There is no need to search for other methods for cleaning these rings.
